LANGUAGE ISSUES IN CANADA

The command over a particular language in a country for once may affect how much you earn there. This is indeed a fact that has been revealed according to a new study made in Canada. The research was conducted by Canadian universities. People who are weak with their command over the language of French and English in Canada actually tend to get wages cut by as much as thirty percent.

Economist Thomas Lemieux and Brahim Boudarbat from University of B.C. and Universite de Montreal respectively came up with this study that brought to light these issues. The report was thus named by the federal department of human resources publication as: The Poor Got Poorer. There has been a segregation going on even among immigrants. This is even comparing them with native born and native speaking Canadians.

For once, these immigrants are either doing much better than the natives or for that matter doing extremely bad. This is in diverse fields of education, Business, etc. Even as the rich get richer in one of the most affluent countries of the world today, the ones who are yet struggling continue to struggle only some more now. This is all the more true for the immigrants that come from Asia which actually sees as many as two thirds of them coming in.

Immigrants with very strong control over the languages of English and French, high educational qualifications and work experience tend to do much better when compared with the others. Add to this, the ones who come to the country still in their twenties or younger than twenty fare even better as they are thus able to adjust themselves to the overall surrounding of the country much better.

As many as 12.7 per immigrants in 2001 had strong educational qualifications, that included postgraduate degrees. Now compare this with the mere 5.5 per cent of Canadians with postgraduate degrees.

Then there are those who are very poor with their language skills in terms French and English and are even poor in terms their educational qualifications.

Another major hindrance here is that education comes very expensive, even costlier than the other luxuries of today. This is where the relatively uneducated ones from humble back ground find it increasingly difficult to get themselves and their kids the best of education in the affluent country of Canada.
